If you want your progressive rock to come with an edge, I have just the band for you. Italian progressive metal outfitTwinspirits has released their first CD entitled The Music That Will Heal the World and it gets top marks in my books. This CD manages to bring together all the elements needed to fulfill the prog-metal mandate and more.

In many respects Twinspirits is the latest musical project for keyboardist Daniele Liverani so while the guitars from Tommy Ermolli shine throughout the keyboards are very much a part of the band’s overall sound. Vocalist Soren Nico Adamsen chooses to sing in English and with no accent that might have distracted some, his voice rings clean and clear. The band’s rhythm section of drums and bass are provided by Dario Ciccioni and Alberto Rigoni respectively. Interestingly Rigoni comes to the band formerly performing with a Dream Theater cover band and it is that band that provides the nearest similarities in progressive style.

The music created by Twinspirits delivers many familiar elements to prog metal fans, but also offers something for fans of aggressive and adventurous music as well. It’s not all high-tension mayhem with the double kick drum going at the speed of sound. There are plenty of moments where the band takes everything back a notch or two as in “What You Want” (6:55) that is essentially more of a symphonic ballad, the kind you might hear on a Queensryche release. The CD starts out strong with a very Dream Theater like track called “Projected” (4:23) that clearly sets the tone and there are other’s along the way that echo the same aggression. I mentioned the strong keyboard presence and they shine on what are easily my favorite tracks “Take My Hand” (7:52) and “It’s Just Life” (7:27) both in terms of lead lines and orchestral synth pads. The longest tracks are 10 and 12 minutes with lots of shifting time signatures but that’s true of even a few of the shorter tracks. The compositions of Twinspirits’ The Music That Will Heal the World are well crafted and nicely arranged displaying a rich, full and interesting sound.

This being Twinspirits first release it’s quite an accomplishment. It is easy to fall into the prog metal routine, but these guys can obviously play, and what’s more they know their craft and are able to compose music that’s a notch or two above what you might expect on a first release. The music is full, almost lush in a heavy and bombastic manner. Fans of the prog metal genre and the bands mentioned will find much to like in Twinspirits. These guys have nowhere to go but up and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors. Well done!
